    The “Shal” by Ermek Tursunov won Crystal Simorgh for Best Technical or Artistic Achievement at Fajr International Film Festival

    "Shal" directed by Ermek Tursunov and produced by JSC "Kazakhfilm" named after Shaken Aimanov won Crystal Simorgh for Best Technical or Artistic Achievement at the 32nd Fajr International Film Festival which is held from February 1 to 11 in Tehran, Iran. The Prize was handed to actor Yerbolat Toguzakov who presented film to the public. The film was screened in the international competition programme “World Panorama”.

    The jury members included film director Bruce Beresford (Australia), cinema analyst Bérénice Reynaud (France), film director Mani Ratnam (India), film director Shinji Ayoma (Japan), editor Sylvia Ingemarsdotter (Sweden), film producer Fereshteh Taerpour (Iran) and cinematographer Mahmoud Kalari (Iran).

    “The New World” by the Dutch filmmaker Jaap van Heusden has won the best film award. The award was given to film producer Marc Bary. Issaka Sawadogo won a Crystal Simorgh for Best Actor and Bianca Krijgsman was awarded a Crystal Simorgh for Best Actress for their roles in “The New World”. The Crystal Simorgh for Best Director went to Turkey’s Reis Celik for his “Night of Silence”. Russian director/screenwriter Yuri Bykov was honored with a jury special award for his crime drama “The Major”. The jury also presented another special award to Ebrahim Hatamikia, Iranian director and screenwriter of “Che”. Melina Pota Koljevic and Srdjan Koljevic won a Crystal Simorgh for Best Screenwriter for “Circles” by the Serbian director Srdan Golubovic.

    The Fajr Film Festival was founded in 1982 by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance of Iran. It is Iran’s most important film presentation and competition festival and takes place every year on the anniversary of the Iranian revolution.

    “Shal” was released nationally on October 11 in 2012 and was well received by the audience. It has won at the National Awards “Altyn Adam” in the “Film of the Year” category and actor Yerbolat Toguzakov who played a leading role in the film won “Actor of the Year” award. During the National cinema award  “Kulager-2012” ceremony it received the Best Picture award. The leading actor Yerbolat Toguzakov won in the Best actor category.
    Film also won the main Prize for the Best Full-length feature “The Golden Vine” Award while the leading actor Yerbolat Toguzakov took Prize for the Best Actor at the "Kinoshock-2013". In October it was selected as the Kazakhstani entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards. "Shal" was also among nominees (for actor Yerbolat Toguzakov and cinematographer Murat Aliyev) in the running for 7th Asia-Pacific Screen Awards.

    The film was also featured in the “Third Age” programme of the 35th anniversary “Moscow International Film Festival”, at the 3rd Beijing International Film Festival, in “Dynamic Kazakh Cinema: Special Event” programme of  IX “Eurasia” IFF, in the main competition programme of Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, at 4th Rostov International Family Film Festival “Up” and in the Awards Buzz section of the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
